As a mom of two, I’m always looking for trails that are not only beautiful but also manageable for little legs (and realistic for baby-wearing days too). After exploring several hiking trails within Nashville and up to two hours outside the city, I’ve put together a list of some of the best family-friendly hikes near Nashville that we’ve personally done and loved.
Whether you’re looking for a quick nature walk close to the city or a full day adventure at a state park, these trails are all easy, scenic, and perfect for families.

Easy and Family-Friendly Hikes Near Nashville
All of the hikes listed below are great for families with kids and are ones we have personally experienced over the years. As a mom, I know how important it is to find trails that are not only beautiful but also realistic for little legs, snack breaks, and those moments when someone suddenly decides they are “too tired to walk.”
Most of these trails are short and easy to moderate in difficulty with well marked paths, making them perfect for beginners, younger kids, and even baby wearing moms. Many of them also offer a mix of scenery like waterfalls, overlooks, lakes, and shaded forest trails, which helps keep kids engaged and excited along the way.
These hikes are located anywhere from right inside Nashville to about two hours outside of the city, so whether you are looking for a quick outdoor escape or planning a full day adventure, there is something here for every family.
Before heading out, I always recommend checking trail conditions, packing plenty of water and snacks, and taking your time. Hiking with kids is not about rushing to the end, it is about enjoying the experience, exploring nature together, and creating those memories along the way.
Burgess Falls State Park
Located about an hour east of Nashville, Tennessee, Burgess Falls State Park is one of the most popular hiking sLocated about an hour east of Nashville, Tennessee, Burgess Falls State Park is one of the best waterfall hikes in the area and a great option for families. What makes this trail especially fun is that you do not just see one waterfall, you get multiple waterfall views along a relatively short hike.
- Distance from Nashville: 1 hour 16 minutes
- Kid-Friendly: Yes
- Stroller-Friendly: No
This hike is made up of two main trail sections, the River Trail and the Base of Falls Trail. Both offer different experiences and views of the waterfalls.
River Trail
The River Trail is the main trail and the one most families will complete. It is well marked and relatively easy to follow, making it a great option for kids.
- Distance: 0.8 miles (about 1.6 miles round trip)
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Along this trail, you will pass four beautiful waterfalls:
- Falling Water Cascades – a 20 foot cascade.
- Little Falls – 30 foot upper falls
- Middle Falls – 80 foot middle falls
- Burgess Falls – 136 food lower falls
Each section of the trail builds up to the final overlook, which gives you a stunning view of Burgess Falls. This is a great spot to take a break, have snacks, and enjoy the scenery with your kids.
Base of Falls Trail
The Base of Falls Trail branches off from the overlook and leads down into the gorge. This portion of the hike is shorter but more challenging due to the steep incline and steps.
- Distance: 0.3 miles round trip
- Difficulty: Moderate
This trail gives you a closer perspective of the waterfall and is a great add on if your kids are comfortable with a slightly more challenging path.
From personal experience, my two girls were able to complete both trails with a few breaks along the way. Taking your time and treating it as a relaxed hike makes it much more enjoyable for everyone.
Update: Access to the Base of Falls Trail remains limited or closed at times due to safety concerns and trail conditions. Be sure to check current park updates before visiting.

Fall Creek Falls State Park
Fall Creek Falls State Park is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in Tennessee and one of our favorite places for both hiking and camping. Located just over two hours from Nashville, this park is perfect for a full day trip or even a weekend getaway with the family.
- Distance from Nashville: 2 hours 11 minutes
- Kid-Friendly: Yes
- Stroller-Friendly: No
This state park is known for its stunning waterfall, Fall Creek Falls, but it is also home to several other waterfalls and scenic areas. Beyond hiking, there are plenty of activities including swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and camping, which makes it a great all-in-one destination for families.
We visited in May and immediately fell in love with how beautiful and peaceful the trails were. There are several kid-friendly trails throughout the park, but here are a few of the best ones to explore with children.

Fall Creek Falls Base Trail
The Fall Creek Falls Base Trail leads you down to the base of the waterfall and offers a completely different perspective compared to the overlook.
- Distance: 0.35 miles one way
- Difficulty: Beginner to intermediate
This trail is rocky and includes an incline, especially on the way back up. While it is manageable for older kids, younger children may need help or a baby carrier.
From experience, my youngest needed assistance on the way back up, while my oldest handled the trail really well. Taking breaks along the way made a big difference for us.
Cane Creek Cascades via Campground Spur Trail
This is one of the best spots in the park if you are looking to relax and enjoy the water.
- Distance: 0.15 miles one way
- Difficulty: Easy
This short trail starts near Campground C and leads to a suspension bridge and the cascades. It is a fun and unique experience for kids, especially crossing the bridge.
If the suspension bridge is not a good fit for your family, you can also access the cascades from the Nature Center parking area.
Rocky Point Overlook
Rocky Point Overlook is a short and scenic trail that leads to a beautiful view of Fall Creek Falls from above.
- Distance: 0.65 miles one way
- Difficulty: Beginner to intermediate
Most of the trail is easy, but there is a bluff area at the end that requires extra caution. This is best suited for older kids or for younger children who are being carried.
As always, be sure to keep a close eye on little ones near the overlook.
Overview of Fall Creek Falls
From our experience, Fall Creek Falls State Park is one of those places where you can easily spend an entire day exploring without feeling rushed. Between the different trails and activities, it is a great destination to return to again and again.
Update: Fall Creek Falls State Park has undergone major renovations in recent years, including a new lodge, updated facilities, and improved trail access. The park is more family-friendly and accessible than ever.

Twin Falls at Rock Island State Park
Twin Falls at Rock Island State Park is one of the most unique and visually striking waterfalls in Tennessee. The Downstream Trail provides a relatively short and scenic hike that leads you alongside the river to multiple viewpoints of the falls.
- Distance from Nashville: 1 hour 43 minutes
- Trail Length: 1.55 miles loop
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
- Kid-Friendly: Yes with supervision
This trail offers plenty of spots to stop for photos and enjoy the view, making it a great option for a slower paced family hike.
Update: Trail conditions can vary depending on water levels and weather, so it is recommended to check conditions before visiting, especially after heavy rainfall.

South Cumberland State Park
South Cumberland State Park is one of the most scenic areas near Nashville and offers a variety of hiking trails that are perfect for families. The Savage Gulf area, in particular, has some of the best short and rewarding hikes with waterfalls, overlooks, and beautiful forest scenery.
- Distance from Nashville: about 1 hour 35 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes
- Kid-Friendly: Yes with supervision
- Stroller-Friendly: No
I have visited this area multiple times, once for a father daughter backpacking trip with my dad and again during a family trip to Fall Creek Falls. Each visit has been a completely different experience, but always just as beautiful.
There are several trails in this area, but the most family-friendly options include Laurel Falls Trail, Stone Door Trail, Greeter Falls, and Blue Hole Trail. While these trails are shorter and manageable, there are bluff areas with steep drop offs, so it is important to keep a close eye on little ones.
Laurel Falls Trail
Laurel Falls Trail is a short and easy hike located right behind the Stone Door Ranger Station. It leads to a beautiful overlook of Laurel Falls.
- Distance: 0.3 miles loop
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
The trail includes stairs that can be slippery at times, so proper footwear is recommended. Once you reach the overlook, there is a steep drop off, so be sure to hold your child’s hand and stay aware of your surroundings.
Stone Door Trail
Stone Door Trail is located right next to Laurel Falls and offers one of the most impressive overlook views in the area.
- Distance: 0.9 miles one way
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Along the trail, you will find an overlook with benches, which makes for a great place to take a break. As you continue, you will reach the bluff area known as Stone Door.
This section has steep drop offs, and while many families do explore this area, it is a personal decision based on your comfort level with your kids. When we visited, I chose to be extra cautious, especially with my youngest who has no fear of heights.
Greeter Falls
Greeter Falls is one of the most popular hikes in South Cumberland and features two waterfalls along the trail.
- Distance: 0.8 miles one way approximately
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
The trail includes some incline sections and a large spiral staircase that leads down to the base of the falls. The staircase is a fun experience but can be a bit challenging, so take your time going down and back up.
Blue Hole Trail
Blue Hole Trail is a shorter and easier option located near the Greeter Falls trailhead.
- Distance: 0.4 miles one way approximately
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
This trail leads to a peaceful creek area with beautiful views and is usually less crowded than Greeter Falls. It is a great option if you are looking for a quieter and more relaxed hike.
From experience, this was a great trail to start with before heading to Greeter Falls.
Overview of South Cumberland State Park
South Cumberland State Park is a great destination if you want a mix of short hikes with big views. Each trail offers something different, which makes it easy to customize your visit based on your family’s comfort level and time.
Update: Trail improvements and updated signage have been added throughout the Savage Gulf area, making it easier to navigate between trailheads and plan your hikes.

Cummins Falls State ParkCummins Falls State Park
Cummins Falls State Park is one of the most well known waterfall destinations in Tennessee and a popular spot for visitors looking to experience a beautiful waterfall up close. While the main hike down to the gorge is more advanced, there is still an easy and family-friendly option that offers incredible views.
- Distance from Nashville: 1 hour 19 minutes
- Kid-Friendly: Yes for overlook trail
- Stroller-Friendly: No
The Falls Overlook Trail is the best option for families with younger kids or anyone looking for a shorter and easier hike.
Falls Overlook Trail
- Distance: 0.45 miles one way
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate
This trail leads to an overlook where you can view Cummins Falls from above. It is a great alternative to the more difficult gorge trail and still gives you a beautiful experience without the added challenge.
Update: A permit is required to access the gorge trail at Cummins Falls due to safety concerns and flash flood risks. The overlook trail remains open and does not require a permit.

Harpeth River State ParkHarpeth River State Park
Harpeth River State Park is one of the closest outdoor spots to Nashville, making it perfect for a quick and easy hiking trip. It is a great option if you want to get outside without committing to a long drive.
- Distance from Nashville: 20 minutes
- Kid-Friendly: Yes
- Stroller-Friendly: No
This park offers short trails with unique features and scenic views of the river.
Tunnel Trail
- Distance: 0.4 miles round trip
- Difficulty: Easy
Tunnel Trail leads to a man made tunnel that was created in the 1800s. Water flows through the tunnel, giving it the appearance of a small waterfall. It is a short and fun hike, especially for kids.
Bluff Trail
- Distance: 0.5 miles round trip
- Difficulty: Moderate
Bluff Trail is slightly more challenging due to elevation gain but offers beautiful views overlooking the Harpeth River. There are areas along the bluff that require extra caution, so be sure to keep a close eye on little ones.
From experience, both of my kids were able to complete these trails, but I stayed close, especially near the bluff areas.
Update: Harpeth River State Park continues to be a popular local destination. Arriving early in the day can help you avoid crowds, especially on weekends.

Radnor Lake State Park
Radnor Lake State Park is one of the best places to go for an easy and peaceful walk right within Nashville. It is perfect for families with younger kids or anyone looking for a more relaxed outdoor experience.

- Stroller-Friendly: Limited on paved paths
The trails here are mostly flat and well maintained, with several paved options that loop around the lake. This makes it one of the most accessible hiking areas near Nashville.
Radnor Lake is also known for its wildlife. During your visit, you may see deer, turtles, birds, and other animals along the trail, which makes the experience even more exciting for kids.
Update: Radnor Lake remains a protected natural area with certain trail restrictions in place to preserve wildlife. Be sure to follow posted signs and stay on designated paths.

Dunbar Cave State Park
Dunbar Cave State Park, located in Clarksville, Tennessee, is a unique destination that combines history and nature. The trails here are short and easy, making them ideal for families with kids.

From personal experience, this park is great for a slower paced visit where you can take your time and explore without feeling rushed.
