Best Beaches in Isabela, Puerto Rico for Families

When you visit Isabela, you’ll quickly see that its beaches are its biggest draw. Here are some of the best kid-friendly beaches in Isabela, plus what makes each special.

Playa Montones

Playa Montones is a local favorite for families, thanks to its natural tidal pool. The calm, clear water here is ideal for kids to swim safely. There are shallow areas for toddlers to splash around, while bigger kids love snorkeling and exploring the rocks. Bring water shoes and a picnic cause you could easily spend an entire day here. Oh and loads of sunblock!

Parking

There is free and paid parking. The paid parking is $10 and located at Parador Villas del Mar Haus. You have to click the button at the gate and tell them that you are there for beach parking. They have restrooms at the resort as well but you have to pay $1 each time you use the bathroom.

Food

You can grab some beach essentials, rent umbrellas, or enjoy some food and drinks at Kiosko “La Pocita” which is located right on the beach. You will see a ramp leading up to it. There is also another restaurant right behind it called Olas y Arena for more food and drink options.

Playa Shacks

Playa Shacks is a bit more rustic and best suited for families with older kids who love to explore. Here you’ll find tide pools, snorkeling spots, and beautiful coral formations. Always keep an eye on kids near the water, as currents can shift. It’s a quiet beach for a more adventurous day. I highly recommend water shoes to go here. It’s definitely best for snorkeling and just enjoying the shore.

Parking

There is free parking alongside the road if you get there early enough.

Food

There is no restaurants located on the beach or walking distance to the beach. Right before turning into the beach area there is a stop called La Parada de los Surfers where they sell empanadillas, pastelillos, rellenos de papa, various drinks, and more. This spot is one of my favorites when I lived here.

Playa Jobos

Jobos Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the area. It’s a well-known surf spot, but it also has gentle shallow areas where families can swim and play. Local food kiosks line the beach, so you can grab fresh empanadillas, pinchos, or ice-cold coconut water. There are plenty of shaded spots if you need a break from the sun.

Parking

There is free parking alongside the road if you get there early enough. The paid parking ranges between $5 and $10. I would recommend arriving early. This beach is a popular one and gets busy quick.

Food

There’s various food and drink options located right alongside the beach perfect to grab lunch if needed. Some of these include:

Beach Safety Tips for Families

• Always check for posted signs about currents or riptides.
• Watch for sudden drop-offs or waves at higher tide.
• Stick to natural tide pools or protected areas for smaller children.
• Bring sunscreen, sun hats, and plenty of drinking water.
• Pack a beach tent or umbrella for shade during the hottest part of the day.
• Stay hydrated so bring plenty of water to drink.

Things to Pack for a Family Beach Day

• Life jacket for little ones. I use this red toddler swim life jacket and we really love it. It has a grab strap at the back of the neck incase you have to quickly grab your child. The color red also makes it easier to spot your kid in the water. It also has straps that go between their legs so it doesn’t come off easily along with clips and a zipper to hold it tight around them.
• A beach blanket
• Shade like an umbrella, canopy, or small tent
• Sunblock – If you’re not used to being in the sun I recommend using 50spf or higher.
• Sun protection like a hat and sunglasses
• SPF lip balm
• Phone charger
• Food, snacks, and water
• Change of clothes
• Beach towels

• Cash for food and drinks

Family-Friendly Things to Do in Isabela, Puerto Rico

While the beaches are the highlight, Isabela has plenty more to explore with your family. Here I will highlight the best things to do in the pueblo of Isabela.

Paseo Tablado de Isabela

This oceanfront boardwalk is perfect for a morning or sunset stroll. It’s stroller-friendly, and kids can ride bikes or scooters while you enjoy the views.

Note: (July 2025) Parts of the boardwalk were under renovations in some areas at the time we visited but still enjoyable. Just couldn’t go all the way to the other side of the boardwalk.

Tunel de Guajataca

For a bit of local history and adventure, visit the Tunel de Guajataca. This historic railroad tunnel is an easy walk, with great photo opportunities. On the other side of the tunnel, you’ll find dramatic ocean views and rocky cliffs. Keep an eye on kids, as there are no guardrails near the cliff edge. Continue on the trails to get to the beach for more stunning ocean views and a beautiful scenic trail.

If you are visiting the Tunel de Guajataca I recommend to also check out El Merendero de Guajataca located in Quebradillas but directly next to the tunnel. The border of Isabela and Quebradillas lies between these two spots and they’re both a must visit if you’re in this area.

Cara del Indio

This quick roadside stop is a fun way to break up your day. Cara del Indio is a massive rock carving of a Taíno chief’s face. Kids will love seeing this local landmark and hearing the legend behind it. You can learn more about the history of Cara del Indio here.

Note: Cara del Indio is located right next to the Tunel de Guajataca so you can visit this spot in the same day.

Shopping at Plaza Isabela

If you need a break from the sun, stop by Plaza Isabela for some casual shopping. Local stores carry unique souvenirs, handmade crafts, and little finds you won’t get at the big resorts. It’s also a good rainy-day activity. Some of my favorite stores are:

The Coffee Spot

This cozy café is perfect for breakfast or a mid-day treat. They’re known for fresh-baked pastries, good coffee, and kid-friendly options like smoothies and sandwiches. It’s a great place to fuel up before a beach day.

La Parada de Los Surfers

This street-side kiosk has some of the best empanadas, papas rellenas, and other local foods to grab. This spot is perfect for after the beach or to grab a bite to eat for lunch on your way to the beach. So many delicious items on their menu. I have been going here since before I got married over 14 years ago and it is still a hit!

Palo Restaurant

A fantastic casual‐dining option with a family‑friendly atmosphere during lunch and early evening hours. Located near the shoreline, Palo offers local seafood, pastas, and sandwiches, plus an outdoor seating area where kids can move around freely. It’s a great midday stop after beach time or exploring nearby attractions.

Panaderia Caban (Caban Bakery)

Every town in Puerto Rico has a beloved bakery, and Caban is Isabela’s go-to. Pick up fresh bread, local pastries, sandwiches, or a box of sweets to enjoy on the beach. Kids always love picking out their own treat.

Other Family-Friendly Restaurants

Isabela has plenty of casual spots that welcome families. Some to consider:

• El Anzuelo Grill & Cantina – Seafood and Puerto Rican favorites with a relaxed vibe.
• Ocean Front Bar & Restaurant – Open-air spot with ocean views and a kid-friendly menu.
• Tsunami Restaurant & Bar – Good for fresh local cuisine with outdoor seating. Visit during the day for a quieter, family atmosphere.
• By Cheff’s Restaurant – The food was very good and the mofongo’s were huge and delicious. The vibe was great but the only downfall was the music that was playing. It was loud that night and hard to talk with family so maybe it’s best to visit during the day time.

Tips for Planning Your Family Trip to Isabela, Puerto Rico

• Best Time to Visit: The best time for a family trip to Isabela is during the dry season from December through March, when you’ll find the sunniest weather, calm ocean conditions, and the least rain. Spring (April through early June) can also be a good time with fewer crowds and slightly lower prices. Summer and early fall (July to November) are the hottest and rainiest months, and they fall within hurricane season, so if you visit then, just stay flexible and consider travel insurance.
• Where to Stay: Look for beachfront rentals, family-friendly resorts, or small hotels that welcome kids. Many places in Isabela have direct beach access, pools, and kitchenettes, which make traveling with kids so much easier.
• Getting Around: Renting a car is highly recommended. Public transportation is very limited, so having your own vehicle makes it easy to hop between beaches, restaurants, and local attractions at your own pace.
• Beach Packing List: Bring sunscreen, water shoes for rocky beaches, bug spray, hats, and plenty of beach gear for the kids. A small cooler is helpful for keeping snacks and drinks cold during beach days.
• Packing List: Shorts, shirts, tank tops, summer dresses, rompers, comfortable shoes, swimsuits, flip flops or sandals, sunglasses, medications, essentials, etc…
• Stay Safe: Always keep an eye on local weather, especially during hurricane season. Swim in designated safe areas, watch for strong currents or changing tides, and follow any posted local guidance. A simple first aid kit is also handy when exploring with little ones.
