GoTenna Mesh – Stay Connected

“And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul.” By: John Muir. Usually when we go to the forest, the mountains, or anywhere outdoors we go to disconnect from the world and connect with ourselves or those we are exploring with. By disconnecting we are also making ourselves vulnerable to risks in a potential emergency situation. GoTenna has created a mesh networking device called GoTenna Mesh that allows you to explore and wander through the world worry free keeping you connected with those you are traveling with. Here is how it works.

What Is GoTenna Mesh?

GoTenna Mesh is very simple and easy to use. It is a small radio like device that gives your phone a signal when you don’t have one. It runs on a mesh network that privately and automatically relays messages through other devices to extend beyond point-to-point range. The bigger the GoTenna network grows the stronger your communication gets.

When you receive you GoTenna Mesh device you can connect it with your phone by pairing it via bluetooth. Download the GoTenna app and set up your account. Now when you need to use GoTenna to send messages or gps locations, you can do so through the app.

But What Exactly Is A Mesh Network?

The mesh network works very simply. Say you and your friend are exploring a new location. Let’s say Nashville for instance. You both split up to explore different areas. Say you want to explore the city shops and restaurants and your friend wants to explore a state park nearby, let’s say Radnor Lake State Park and hit the trails. You are both about 10 miles away and your friend has lost signal. You tried texting her and nothing. Just turn on your GoTenna Mesh device, pair it with your phone, and now you can text her worry free through the GoTenna Mesh app.

But your friend still has no signal. How will she get this message? Easy. She has GoTenna Mesh connected to her device as well. The message will bounce off of other mech devices making its way all the way to your friend. Now she can send you her gps location if you want to meet up with her and see all those beautiful turtles that she was talking about. Here is a video and an article that will show you exactly how it works. You can also view their entire Mesh Network here.

How To Get A GoTenna Mesh?

Getting a GoTenna Mesh is easy. You can purchase one through their website here. Each package comes with 2 GoTenna Mesh devices. One for you and one for your travel companion. There are two color options that you can purchase. One is orange and purple and the other options is blue and green. I have the orange and purple one. Each device comes with a strap that you can use to attach to your keys, backpack, purse or anything else that you may want to attach it to. It also comes with a cable to charge the device as well as a cute GoTenna Mesh sticker that you can attach to your laptop or Hydroflask.

  1. This would be perfect for us. I am often out with our three children in quite remote areas of Sweden on my own. It would give me some reassurance that I could reach someone if things didn’t go to plan!! It looks easy to use too, which is ideal for someone like me, a techno biff!
