Why So Many People Are Becoming Travel Agents in 2026
Travel has made an incredible comeback over the past few years. Families are prioritizing experiences together more than ever, and many people are finally taking the trips they have been dreaming about. Because of that, the demand for knowledgeable travel advisors has grown quickly.
At the same time, many people are rethinking what they want their work and life to look like. More individuals are searching for flexible careers that allow them to work from home, create their own schedule, and build something meaningful without sacrificing time with their families.
This is one of the reasons why becoming a travel agent in 2026 has become such an attractive opportunity.
For me personally, travel has always been about creating meaningful memories with my family. Some of our favorite experiences have come from exploring new places together, hiking beautiful trails, or visiting destinations that left us completely in awe. Those moments are what originally inspired me to start sharing our travels online and eventually step into the travel industry.
Over time I realized that helping other families create those same kinds of memories was something I truly loved doing.
Another reason this career is growing is the rise of niche travel. Travelers today are looking for experts who understand specific types of vacations such as Disney trips, cruises, all inclusive resorts, and group travel experiences. When someone works with a travel advisor who specializes in those areas, the planning process becomes much easier and the trip itself becomes even more memorable.
For people who love travel, enjoy helping others, and want a business that can grow alongside their lifestyle, becoming a travel agent in 2026 has become a path many are choosing to explore.
What Does a Travel Agent Actually Do?
Many people assume that being a travel agent simply means booking flights and hotels. While booking travel is certainly part of the job, there is actually much more involved in helping clients plan a great trip. While booking travel is part of the job, there is actually much more that goes into helping clients plan a great trip.
As a travel agent, my role is to help my clients plan vacations that are smooth, memorable, and tailored to their needs. Every traveler is different, so the planning process often includes researching destinations, comparing resorts, understanding transportation options, and making sure every detail of the trip works well together.
A travel agent also supports their clients before, during, and after the trip. This can include answering questions during the planning process, helping with itinerary details, and assisting if something unexpected happens while the client is traveling.
One of the things I enjoy most about this career is learning about destinations and experiences that I can recommend to my clients. Whether it is a Disney vacation, a cruise, or an all inclusive resort, every trip is a little different. Helping someone plan a vacation they will remember for years is incredibly rewarding.
Travel agents also earn commissions from travel suppliers when trips are booked. In some cases there may also be bonuses or incentives offered by travel companies. This allows travel agents to build a business that grows over time as they continue helping more clients plan their vacations.

Is Becoming a Travel Agent Worth It?
For many people, one of the biggest questions is whether becoming a travel agent is truly worth it. The answer will always depend on the person, but there are several reasons why this business has become such an appealing opportunity.
Compared to many other businesses, starting a travel business has a relatively low startup cost. You do not need to purchase inventory, rent a storefront, or hire employees when you first begin. Many travel agents start their business from home and build it gradually over time.
Another benefit is flexibility. Many travel agents begin part time while working another job or while raising their families. As their client base grows, some eventually transition into working full time in the travel industry.
Income Potential for Travel Agents
Travel agents typically earn income through commissions paid by hotels, cruise lines, resorts, and other travel suppliers. The amount someone earns will depend on how many trips they book and how much time they dedicate to growing their business.
Some agents treat it as a side income, while others build it into a full time career. For people who enjoy helping others travel and are willing to learn the business, the income potential can grow steadily over time.
I also share several ways I personally generate income online in my article about how I make money from home to travel.
How Much Do Travel Agents Make?
One of the most common questions people ask when considering this career is how much travel agents actually earn.
Travel agent income can vary depending on several factors including experience, the number of clients served, and the types of trips being booked. Most travel agents earn commissions from hotels, cruise lines, resorts, and tour companies when clients book travel through them.
Some agents treat their travel business as a side income while others grow it into a full time career. As an agent gains experience and builds a larger client base, their earning potential can increase over time.
Like many small businesses, income typically grows gradually as relationships and referrals develop.

Benefits of Becoming a Travel Agent
Becoming a travel agent offers several advantages that make it an appealing career path for many people. For parents, families, and anyone looking for a flexible work opportunity, this business can provide both freedom and long term potential.
Work From Home or Anywhere
Many travel agents run their business entirely online. This allows them to work from home or from anywhere with an internet connection. For people who want to avoid commuting or prefer working in a comfortable environment, this flexibility can be a major benefit.
Create Your Own Schedule
One of the biggest reasons people explore becoming a travel agent is the ability to build a schedule that fits their lifestyle. Travel agents often have the flexibility to work during hours that make sense for them and their families.
Build a Business Around Your Lifestyle
Unlike traditional careers that require strict schedules, a travel business can grow at your own pace. Some agents start part time while working another job or raising their children, then gradually expand their business over time.
Travel Perks and Industry Opportunities
Travel agents often gain access to industry training, familiarization trips, and special travel opportunities that help them better understand destinations and different travel suppliers. These experiences allow agents to provide better recommendations and more informed guidance to their clients.
Supportive Communities and Mentorship
Many travel agents join host agencies or professional communities that provide training, mentorship, and support. Learning from experienced agents and connecting with others in the industry can make the process of building a travel business much easier and more enjoyable.
If you are curious about the biggest advantages of working in the travel industry, I break down several of them in my article on five reasons to become a travel agent in 2026.
Common Myths About Becoming a Travel Agent
There are still quite a few misconceptions about what it means to be a travel agent today. Many of these ideas come from outdated views of the travel industry or misunderstandings about how modern travel businesses operate. Let’s clear up a few of the most common myths.
Travel Agents Are Obsolete
Some people believe that travel agents are no longer needed because travelers can book trips online themselves. While it is true that booking platforms exist, many travelers still prefer working with a knowledgeable advisor who can guide them through the planning process.
Travel agents provide expertise, personalized recommendations, and support that booking websites simply cannot offer. When travelers are planning complex trips, group vacations, cruises, or destination weddings, having an experienced advisor can make the entire process much easier.
You Have to Be a Travel Expert
Another common myth is that you need to have extensive travel experience before becoming a travel agent. In reality, many people enter the industry with little professional travel experience.
Training programs, supplier education, and ongoing learning opportunities help travel agents build knowledge over time. Many agents start by specializing in destinations or types of travel they are already familiar with and continue expanding their expertise as they grow their business.
Is It a Scam or Not a Real Business
Some people assume that travel agent opportunities are not legitimate or that the industry is outdated. In reality, the travel industry is a multi billion dollar global industry that continues to grow every year.
Travel advisors work with major travel suppliers including cruise lines, hotels, tour companies, and resorts. When structured properly through a host agency or established travel network, becoming a travel agent can be a legitimate small business opportunity.
You Need Experience to Get Started
Many successful travel agents start with little to no prior industry experience. What matters more is the willingness to learn, stay organized, and provide excellent service to clients.
With proper training and mentorship, beginners can gradually build their confidence and develop the skills needed to grow their travel business.

Who Should Consider Becoming a Travel Agent?
While this career can be a great opportunity for many people, it is not the perfect fit for everyone. However, certain personalities and lifestyles tend to thrive in the travel industry.
Stay at Home Parents
Many parents explore becoming a travel agent because it allows them to work from home while still being present for their families. This flexibility makes it possible to build a business without sacrificing time with their children.
Teachers and Educators
Teachers often enjoy becoming travel agents because they already have strong organizational skills and enjoy helping others learn and experience new places.
Military Spouses
Military spouses frequently look for portable careers that can move with them during relocations. A travel business can be run online, which makes it adaptable to changing locations.
Content Creators and Bloggers
Bloggers and content creators often transition into travel planning because they already share travel experiences and destination recommendations with their audiences.
People Who Love Travel
Many travel agents simply have a passion for travel and enjoy helping others explore new destinations. That enthusiasm can naturally translate into helping clients plan meaningful trips.
Career Changers
Some people discover the travel industry after working in completely different careers. Becoming a travel agent can offer a fresh start and the opportunity to build something new.
If you are still deciding whether this career is the right fit for you, I also share eight important questions to ask yourself before becoming a travel agent in another article.
How to Become a Travel Agent
If you are interested in becoming a travel agent, the process is more straightforward than many people expect. While every path may look slightly different, most travel agents follow a few similar steps when starting their business.
Choose a Host Agency
Most new travel agents partner with a host agency. A host agency provides access to booking systems, travel suppliers, training programs, and industry support that make it possible to operate a travel business without starting completely from scratch.
The host agency I personally work with is InteleTravel, which has been part of the travel industry since 1991 and has more than 30 years of experience supporting travel advisors. Over the years, InteleTravel has grown into one of the largest host travel agencies in the world, with a network of independent travel advisors across the United States and several other countries.
InteleTravel is also part of the Travel Leaders Network, one of the largest travel agency networks in North America. Being connected to this network provides access to additional travel resources, preferred supplier relationships, and tools that help travel advisors better serve their clients.
When someone joins InteleTravel, they gain access to a wide range of travel suppliers including cruise lines, resorts, hotels, tour companies, and travel brands around the world. This allows agents to plan vacations through trusted partners while earning commissions from those bookings.
Complete Training and Education
Training is an important part of getting started as a travel agent. When someone joins InteleTravel, they receive access to a large library of training and educational resources designed to help new agents understand the travel industry and how to plan trips for clients.
These trainings cover topics such as working with suppliers, learning different destinations, understanding booking platforms, and providing excellent service to travelers.
Agents also have the opportunity to participate in supplier training programs, destination education, and ongoing industry learning opportunities. Over time, this training helps agents build confidence and expand their knowledge so they can better assist their clients.
Another advantage is the ability to choose a travel niche that fits your interests. Some agents specialize in cruises, theme parks, family vacations, luxury travel, group trips, destination weddings, or honeymoons. Others explore multiple areas before deciding what they enjoy planning the most.

Begin Marketing Your Services
Once training is complete, travel agents begin sharing their services with potential clients. Many agents start by introducing their travel business on social media and connecting with people who may be planning future vacations.
New agents in our community also receive guidance on how to start marketing themselves online. This includes a full social media launch plan and daily content prompts that help agents get comfortable sharing travel content and talking about their services.
As agents grow their business, they may expand their marketing through referrals, blogging, Pinterest, building a website, or creating helpful travel content that attracts potential clients who are searching for vacation ideas online.
Grow Your Client Base
As travel agents gain experience and begin helping more clients, their business naturally starts to grow. Many travel agents find that referrals become one of their biggest sources of new bookings.
Satisfied clients often return to book future trips and recommend their travel advisor to friends and family. Over time, these relationships help agents build a steady client base and a reputation for helping travelers plan memorable vacations.
As their business grows, some agents choose to specialize in certain destinations or types of travel while others expand into planning larger trips such as group travel, destination weddings, or multi family vacations.

Can You Become a Travel Agent With No Experience?
Many people assume they need years of travel experience before entering the industry. In reality, many successful travel agents start without prior professional experience.
Most new agents learn through training programs, supplier education, and hands on experience while working with their first clients. Over time, agents develop deeper knowledge of destinations, travel planning strategies, and industry tools.
What matters most is a willingness to learn, strong organization skills, and a genuine desire to help people plan memorable travel experiences.
With the right training and support, many beginners successfully build travel businesses even without prior industry experience.
If you want a deeper breakdown of the process, I walk through the full process in my guide on how to become a travel agent.
Why Mentorship Matters When Becoming a Travel Agent
Starting a new business in any industry can feel overwhelming at first. There are many moving parts to learn, and it can be difficult to know where to begin without guidance. That is one of the reasons mentorship can make such a big difference when someone decides to become a travel agent.
While training programs and supplier education teach the technical side of the industry, mentorship provides the support, encouragement, and direction that many new agents need as they begin building their business.
Joining a Team with a Good Travel Agent Leader
When someone joins my team, I work closely with them to help guide them through the early stages of their journey as a travel advisor. I help point them toward the right trainings, resources, and tools so they can learn how the industry works and continue developing their knowledge.
One of the biggest areas I focus on with my team is helping them learn how to market their business and show up consistently online. Many new agents feel unsure about how to introduce themselves as a travel advisor or how to start talking about travel on social media. I help them understand different ways they can begin sharing their business, building their presence, and connecting with potential clients.
We also talk about consistency, mindset, and the importance of building a business step by step. Starting something new can bring a lot of questions, and I make sure my team members know they have someone they can reach out to when they need guidance or encouragement.
While the official training for booking travel and working with suppliers comes directly through the host agency and travel partners, my role as a team leader is to support my agents, answer questions when they come up, and help point them in the right direction as they grow.
Having someone who has already walked the path before you can make the process of becoming a travel agent feel much more manageable and much less overwhelming.

My Experience Becoming a Travel Agent
I started my travel agent business a little over 2 years ago and absolutely love it. It has created an extra source of income for my family and it is a business that works around my schedule, not the other way around. Travel is something that I have always loved so being able to help others with their own trips now has been very rewarding.
Why I Decided to Become a Travel Agent
Before becoming a travel agent, I was a family travel and lifestyle blogger here on The Walking Mermaid. As a blogger, I was already creating travel guides from our own family travels and helping other families plan their own trips. I wanted to help other families create a more meaningful experience for their trips and that was something I couldn’t fully provide to those who reached out to me.
As I continued to offer travel tips to others I realized that I wanted to provide more but I wanted to also make some extra money to continue to support my family. I stumbled upon the opportunity of being a travel agent and after talking with my husband and brainstorming ways to make it work, I decided to dive into the business. Now I have turned that passion of planning trips into a successful travel agent business and best of all, I get to help others do the same.
What Surprised Me the Most About the Travel Industry
Honestly, what surprised me the most about the travel industry was the community. I was lucky to join a very supportive travel community and I know I can fully rely on my team if I ever have any questions along the way. InteleTravel has a ton of resources and a large community and my direct team also provides extensive marketing resources and trainings. I don’t just learn about booking trips but also how to grow my business and market it well on social media.
I also didn’t expect this business to be so rewarding. There is just something about helping families plan trips that are full of experiences and travel memories that they are so happy to share about. Being able to be a part of that planning process and bring my client’s travel vision to life is truly such an amazing feeling all around.
What I Love Most About Being a Travel Agent
The one thing I love the most about being a travel agent is the flexibility to build a business around travel that I love while also working around my schedule. I think as a stay at home mom, having that flexibility is very important. I’m able to be present every day with my kids and continue to run things here at home while also building a business and bringing in a side income around something I love… travel.
How This Career Fits Into My Family Life
I’m a stay at home mom that homeschools, take my daughters to rehearsals, keep up with things at home, and work on our small homestead. Having the flexibility to work from home and still managing things here is perfect. I can work my business in between tasks, while my kids are sleeping, or during lunch breaks and rehearsals.
What I Would Tell Someone Considering This Career
Having a travel agent business is not an overnight success. Being a travel agent and booking trips takes time and consistency. The more you show up for your business, learn new things, and continue to be consistent in marketing, the more rewarding it gets. You have to come in with the mentality of a CEO. Keep in mind that this is a business and you will be providing a professional service to your clients.
However, don’t let that intimidate you. All of the trainings that are in place will help you learn how to be a professional travel agent and how to set up a strong foundation for your business so you can succeed. You just have to show up and do the work. Best of all, we have amazing ambassadors and leaders that will always give you the right support and that itself makes a big difference in your business and overall mindset.
