During my last several years of college life I’ve had the privilege to work with some very amazing and intelligent people. I have met many outstanding professors over Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenessee as well as met many Veterinarians who have helped me out in many ways.
While in college at Austin Peay I decided to join the Pre-Vet Club and join them on some of their events. One of the events that really opened up my eyes and kept me going was volunteer work at the local animal shelter where we drew blood on dogs to see if they tested positive or negative for the blood worm tests. The dogs in these shelters were knew and super friendly. I seriously wanted to take them all home with me but I couldn’t. It broke my heart and knowing that they tested negative for heart worms just made my day. It gave them a better chance at being adopted. Those who tested negative either got treatment or got euthanized which totally devastated me. Very few tested negative and usually by the next weekend that we came back most were already adopted out which was a great relief. During this event I had the privilege to do my first blood draw and also learn how to hold off on a vein and restrain a dog. It was pretty exciting. We all took turns doing it and I must say that we had a very great teacher, Dr. Webb (DVM and a professor at Austin Peay).
Today I asked myself why I was studying to be a Vet. Tech. Well this is why! I love animals and I am very passionate about helping them whether I make money or not. Just having the knowledge needed to properly care for them and nurture them back to help is all I need. To one day feel that pride in me of being able to help another living thing. That education to be able to give each animal out there the proper love, care, affection, and health that they need to live a long, happy, and very healthy life. I hope to continue to learn great things and help many animals in need.
