Back in 2007, I decided to move in with my grandparents in Puerto Rico. I grew closer then ever to my grandparents. I saw their life changes, heard their life stories, their regrets, their worries, their joys. I saw me grow and change because of their influence on me. In 2010 I joined the US Army Reserves and went on my own where I later met my husband. During Basic Training I faced the challenge of my grandfather almost passing away. He was sick in bed and could barely move. It was devastating. He managed to survive and overcome but with the years sadly he’s most his memory. A few months ago I called to speak with them. I was able to talk to him but he didn’t remember me. Not even a minute passed when he forget he was even on the phone. He mumbles in Spanish, “Why am I holding the phone?” as he is putting it down and walking away. My grandma immediately picked it up and apologized.
About a month after that my dad was visiting them and Skype with me so I can say hi to them and see them. My grandfather didn’t even know who I was. He kept asking my grandma (abuela), “Who is that pretty girl that that guy is telling me to say hi too?” My heart sank. He didn’t remember me. It broke my heart. After talking to them during my lunch I went to the car and just cried. I hate to see my grandfather like this.
Just a few years ago he was a strong and healthy man and now he doesn’t even remember when he has to use the bathroom. He used to work hard out in the yard planting banana trees, harvesting crops and taking care of the chickens. Now there’s not much left.
Alzheimer runs in my family. His sister (my dad’s aunt, I guess my second aunt) also suffered of this condition a few years before she passed away. It was devastating to see her go this way. Sadly there’s hundreds if not thousands of people that suffer from this condition that has no cure. For this reason I want to help raise funds for my birthday to help this cause. Help fund research and in hopes help find a cure. It may be too late for my abuelito but it’s never too late to save our future. So please I beg you to join me for my birthday to give hope to others. To raise money for a better future. Even if it’s just five dollars, together we can make a change.
To donate just follow my link here. Fundraiser ends on September 30, 2017 but you can always go here to donate even if the deadline has passed. You can also make it fun and join one of their events and walk for the cause. Find where in your state they have an upcoming event to join here.
Thank you in advanced!
